Learning design can be defined as the process by which instructional materials are developed using theories of learning and instruction. There is an emphasis placed on the implementation as well as the quality of instruction and assessment of learners. Learning design should allow learners to demonstrate their learning in various ways to allow the learner to take ownership in their scholarship. A learning designer should take into account not only the content at hand in a project, but also the development of the learner’s personal soft skills. From Theory to Practice: A Reflection on a Semester of Learning Design

Introduction Instructional design without applying learning theory is like cooking without salt. You can have an incredible dish but it will never reach its full potential. Theory gives designers a foundation for decision making, guides feedback, brings attention to learner autonomy and highlights why collaboration is so important. Over six modules, I worked within SparkyWave Solutions to apply my theoretical learning into real practice. This post will reflect on what each theory looked like in my designs and how I plan to continue building on this strong foundation in the future.
